Belize - "The Jewel"

Belize is a small Central American and Caribbean nation bordered by Mexico, Guatemala, and the Caribbean Sea. It is home to the Western hemisphere's largest Barrier Reef - over 180 miles! Their official language is English, though many different cultures and traditions live here in harmony.

No other country has a greater percentage of its land mass dedicated to natural reserves and parks. The pristine environment consists of mountains, tropical rainforests, ancient Mayan Kingdoms, savannas, coastal lagoons, and underwater utopias.

Sailing in Belize is a dream. The prevailing wind is Easterly, and the best cruising is following the reef which runs north and south.  Think about it - lots of beam reaching in calm, protected waters.  As you sail South from San Pedro you will stop in at numerous charming small islands and coves strung out along the reef.  Nearly everywhere you look you will see tropical beauty - sand islands with tall graceful palms.  The reefs are easily accessible, and offer both shallow snorkeling and deepwater diving.  Some of the islands have small fishing and dive resorts - bungalows along the beach and small thatched roof beach bars with interesting people and excellent local beer.  Seafood is plentiful and inexpensive - just flag down a local fishing boat if you don't feel like catching your own.  Who could ask for more?

Belize has the second longest barrier reef in the world – second only to Australia’s  Great Barrier Reef.  But the Belize reef is special  because it is like a long necklace studded with idyllic palm covered sandy islands.  The interior reef is very accessible from many places in the protected bay.  And reef depths range from surface level to hundreds of feet, so it’s ideal for snorkeling as well as tank diving.

Most of these islands are tiny –  ideal for lunch or sun bathing. A few have bungalows or thatched shelters, but most are natural. You will find yourself trying to pick a favorite, but each one seems more perfect than the last. Two of our favorites are Rendezvous Cay and Goff Cay.
