Typical
Schedule
You can easily spend a week or a month cruising the reefs and idyllic islands
of Belize. You will have more fun if you take it slow and don't try to
cover too many miles. The breeze in Belize is fairly dependable, but
usually drops between 10 and 3, so this is a great take time to take a lunch
break. Anchor at one of the reefs or outside islands to snorkel or dive, or just
for lunch and a siesta.
A typical one-week schedule might be as follows:
Day 1 - snorkel the reef near San Pedro, and then run down to Cay Caulker - only 2 hours South. A perfect anchorage and a charming town - sand streets, colorful buildings, and a wonderful beach. A great spot to do some shopping, have a cold drink under palm trees on the beach, and have a fantastic seafood dinner at bargain prices compared to San Pedro. Check out the wonderful rag hammocks - they can be hung from the spare halyard on the boat, and from your tree or balcony back home. Great tee shirts, sarongs and jewelry too!
Day 2 - Stop at Goff Cay for a midday dive. Plenty of coral and an idyllic palm and sand island for a lunch stop. From there head down to Middle Long Cay for a secure overnight anchorage.
Day 3 - Tabacco Cay - Our favorite of all the islands. A charming waterside thatched bar serves icy Belikans (the wonderful local brew) and tropical drinks along with great conversation about the opportunities in Belize. You can buy fish or conch or lobster (in season) right off the local boats.
Day 4 - No wait! Maybe South Water is our favorite! It's just a short run down from Tobacco, and there is a wonderful eco-resort and reef education installation there called the International Zoological Expeditions. The operators are very friendly and you can get a few provisions from them or enjoy a full dinner in their delightful open-air dining room.
Day 5 - Blue Ground Range - Pull on in to the cozy anchorage and enjoy the view of the Blue Resort. You can trade a few provisions for a large bag of cleaned lobster tails and make a great dinner. We met a young cruising couple from England in a 30 footer - they were delighted to enjoy a lobster dinner with us in our spacious dining area and share the tales of their adventures.
Day 6 - Don't miss the reef at Rendevous. It's just a short run East from Blue Ground, and it has one of the best reefs in the entire chain - and the island is soo photogenic! Overnight at Cay Chapel - treat yourself to some luxury at this world-class resort complete with golf course and gourmet dining.
Day 7 - Home to San Pedro - An easy sail back arriving in time to explore Ambegris Cay in a golf cart and enjoy more of the local cuisine.
